Youth Health Associates expects proctor parents to do the day-to-day parenting for these children until they can either return safely to their own homes or until an alternate plan is found such as living with other family, or living on their own.
In collaboration with the State of Utah, we help eradicate sexual abuse through the finest therapy and mentoring to create an environment of respect and caring where youth internalize attributes, skills and knowledge incompatible with re-offending.
Youth Health Associates is committed to the welfare and growth of the clients we serve and to the safety of the community. We are a clinically driven program motivated by both the Restorative Justice Model and by the standards of treatment and practice put forth by the Network on Juveniles Offending Sexually (NOJOS). Decisions affecting clients are treatment team oriented to ensure appropriate judgment and client growth.
Treatment of Young People with Intellectual Impairment
Youth Health Associates promotes a holistic approach throughout our various programs with a strong emphasis on tailoring the intervention response to the particular needs of the young person, and their parents/caregivers. We are proud to provide treatment to young people dealing with developmental delays or mental retardation. This includes clients who have a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills and impaired intelligence (an IQ of 70 or below). Often these young people have a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning) which started before adolescence and has a lasting effect on development.
YHA’s treatment approaches with these special youth are participative, active and make use of multi-sensory techniques to maximize the young person’s interest/engagement and to link emotion to learning. Drama, games and entertaining approaches are used to increase the likelihood of treatment retention. YHA therapists ensure that treatment messages are explicit and regularly reinforced. Our programs value participation of the client and mark and celebrate small gains in all areas of functioning and behavior, not just those related to sexual misconduct.
Beyond labels, and far beyond the subject of sexually abusive and antisocial behavior addressed in our treatment programs, we recognize and respond to the children, adolescents, and young people with whom we work as whole people, in which sexually abusive and antisocial behavior or other forms of sexually troubled behavior represent simply one element of their makeup and experience. It is a central tenet of Youth Health Associates treatment model that our clients are whole people, that sexually abusive, sexually inappropriate, and antisocial behavior must and can only be understood and treated in this context, and that this idea must be imparted to the youngsters with whom we work, their families, others who provide treatment and care, and the community at large.
The environment we have created for our residents is the right choice for change. Our programs offer a spacious, home-like setting to assist adolescents through issues which cause emotional problems for them and their families. We are proud to be providing unique, tailored therapy to balance our residents’ life-style. Individualized clinical services, competitive recreation, and experiential opportunities with supportive and professional staffing make the difference at YHA.
